Ghost Ships — AIS-Dark Transits at Hormuz
Vessels that switched off AIS near the Strait of Hormuz — transponder gaps that often flag sanctioned-oil cargoes or ship-to-ship transfers — detected from our position history.
Our AIS-gap detector has not flagged any vessels going transponder-dark near the Strait of Hormuz in the last 14 days. When a ship disables its AIS transmitter long enough to slip through the ~21-nautical-mile-wide shipping lanes unobserved — then reappears on the far side — it is logged here as a ghost-ship (or "shadow fleet") event, a common sanctions-evasion tactic for Iranian, Russian and Venezuelan crude. The detector runs hourly against a rolling 14-day position window, so this table repopulates automatically the moment a covert transit is detected.
